Free amateur radio program offered

The Bedford County Amateur Radio Society will present a special Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics program at the Bedford County Library at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, and Saturday, Dec. 3.

John Hogenmiller, Amateur Radio call sign KB3DFZ, will explain and demonstrate the new marriage of radio communications and digital technology. Hogenmiller will show how modern amateur radio operators use their radios, computers and hand-held devices.

Lloyd Roach, call sign K3QNT, will review the early history of Amateur Radio and will have a working two-way shortwave radio station operating from the library.

“With equipment like this, HAM radio operators speak with other operators from all over the world,” Roach said of the equipment that will be set up. QSL cards from all over the globe will be on display as well.

The program is geared to students in middle school but everyone is welcome.

The program is free of charge.

The December presentation will be a repeat of the November event.

The Bedford County Amateur Radio Society is in its 63rd year of service to Bedford County. The club is one of the oldest ARRL affiliated volunteer emergency communications organizations in the nation.

During the S.T.E.M. event, Hogenmiller will explain how to obtain an FCC Amateur Radio License. To learn more about BCARS or how to obtain an FCC amateur radio license, visit www.bcars.org/.
